14 unbelievably racist things European politicians are saying about the Roma
UK Member of Parliament David Blunkett warned that Roma migrants could trigger a race riot: “We have got to change the behaviour and the culture of the incoming community, the Roma community, because there’s going to be an explosion otherwise.” This type of rhetoric matters. It stigmatizes Roma people and deepens prejudice. It also fuels extremism and in some cases, incites violent attacks against Roma communities. Yet many European politicians seem eager to repeat the mistakes of the past. Here are some unbelievably racist statements they’ve made recently. 1. Gilles Bourdouleix, member of National Assembly, France: July 21, 2013: “Maybe Hitler didn’t kill enough of them.” (Note: The Nazis and their partner countries killed up to 220.000 Roma during the Holocaust.)
