3 april, Leiden: lezing over slavernijverleden van Nederland

Op 3 april begint aan de Leidse universiteit een Studium Generale-programma over slavernij, met zes bijeenkomsten. De eerste lezing, getiteld “The Netherlands and its slavery past”, wordt gegeven door Karwan Fatah-Black.

Na de lezing op 3 april volgen er nog vijf andere bijeenkomsten, steeds op dezelfde plek. Op 10 april spreekt Glen Newey over “Liberalism’s dirty secret: property, slavery and freedom”. Op 24 april geeft Jessica Vance Roitman de lezing “’The spirit of insubordination rules’: slavery, abolition and free people of colour in the Dutch Bovenwindse islands of St. Eustatius, Saba and St. Maarten”. Op 1 mei spreekt Felicia Rosu over “The others: gypsy and muslim slaves in early modern Europe”. Op 8 mei zijn er twee lezingen: Ellen Neslo spreekt over “A free non-white elite in Paramaribo, 1800-1863” en Alicia Schrikker over “Indian ocean slavery, 1700-1850”. En op 15 mei geeft Damian Pargas de lezing “Beacons of freedom: runaway slaves in North America, 1775-1860”.

Uit de oproeptekst voor de lezing van 3 april: “The history of slavery has increasingly come into the spotlight in the Netherlands. Although the debate over its legacy can be traced back to the seventeenth century, the most recent wave of exhibitions, documentaries and public debates started around 2012. This lecture will introduce the audience to the basic facts of Dutch involvement in slavery and the slave trade and dispel some of the myths that circulate in the public debate.”
